united way of metro chicago

After relocating to the Merchandise Mart in downtown Chicago, United Way of Metro Chicago looked for ways to incorporate the communities they serve into the design of their new office space, while showing visitors what community looks like and what it means to the brand.

I led my team in the design and production of a large 49’ x 9’ mural covering both the external hallway and interior office entrance. The mural delivered a colorful, fresh and inviting brand experience from the moment people exited the elevator doors.

DESIGN DIRECTOR

ARTIST

  • Produce a mural that serves as a call to arms for humanity to work together and support one another as neighbors; telling the story of an organization working on the forefront of poverty and inequality across thirteen designated communities with impact reaching far beyond the immediate region.

  • To foster and reflect the commuties being served by moving away from a detached, corporate office environment and bringing the “outside in.”

concept + approach

We commissioned local Chicago artist Stephen Flemister for the mural, bringing a deep-rooted community and creative vision to the project. Detailed portraits of familiar faces, actions and landmarks represented both neighborhoods and neighbors served by United Way.

Combining archival photography with digitally-enhanced painting and illustration, the piece became an energetic and bold statement piece luring in visitors who saw their own story reflected, while increasing the collective investment and commitment to United Way’s mission.

Communities became the “heroes” of the mural through the use of full-scale portraits, representing the multitude of United Way neighbors, neighborhoods, occupations, ethnicities and cultures served. These visuals served as a reminder that while each neighborhood has a distinct character, we are all connected. The “helping hand” motif embodies the United Way logo and reinforces acts of giving, receiving, and compassion.

Similarly, the mural works as an extension and reflection of United Way community partners, energizing a broad and diverse range of major gift donors and stewards.

  • We are beyond thrilled with the final mural that welcomes guests to our office suite. The beautiful artistic design and detailed production oversight resulted in a mural that exceeded our expectations and truly reflects the vibrancy and diversity of the many neighborhoods across the city and suburbs where United Way works to build a stronger, more equitable Chicago region.
